Detroit honors its own with Walk to Fame
Detroit launches its equivalent of Hollywood’s Walk of Fame
Many of Detroit’s brightest lights will be honored with a commemorative spot on a Walk to Fame.
The Detroit Entertainment Commission and the Motown Walk to Fame organization announced the inaugural class of 200 at ceremonies Thursday.
Among those on the list are Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Eminem and Local 4’s Carmen Harlan.
Motown star Martha Reeves said this is one of the highest honors of her career.
“Well it’s a dream come true because when I served on the Detroit City Council from 2005 to 2009 I did a lot to encourage the city to commemorate the stars and the people who made Detroit famous,” Reeves said.
Legendary jazz trumpeter Marcus Belgrave said he was also pleased to be among the first members.
“I am so happy to be still living, and honored to be honored,” Belgrave said.
Gregory Reed of the Detroit Entertainment Commission said the Walk to Fame was years in the making.
“I’m just so grateful that the community got behind a project to move the city into a very positive direction in honoring the elders and those who have contributed to this city,” Reed said.Motown founder Berry Gordy will be honored with the very first star on the Detroit Walk to Fame.
